Positioning Oman as a regional gateway for space Sector

The Space Sector in the Sultanate of Oman, overseen by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, is a forward-looking domain focused on building national capabilities in space science and technology. It leverages remote sensing, satellite communications, and space-based monitoring to support areas such as transport, agriculture, environment, and security. The sector also fosters international partnerships, research, and innovation in alignment with Oman Vision 2040.

The Ministry has developed the policy and executive program for the space sector for the next ten years 2023-2033 in cooperation with partners in the sector from various parties and by working with an international expertise specialized in strategic policies and consultations for the space sector. The policy and executive program have been prepared according to three main stages:

  • Facts finding: Studying the current situation of the space sector and analyzing it at the local and global levels
  • Analysis and benchmarking: Preparing the national policy for the Omani space sector
  • Policy and strategy development: Preparing the executive program for the Omani space sector

The executive program for the Omani space sector aims to support the realization of the Sultanate's vision in the field of the space sector. It establishes the Sultanate as a regional gateway to space applications that support economic diversification and reveal future opportunities. The program aims to serve four basic pillars for the space sector, and to determine the positive results of the sector for the country within 10 years through partnership in implementing various programs and initiatives.

14 projects have been identified as part of the Omani space program for the next ten years 2023-2033. These projects are divided into:

  • Core projects (11 projects), are considered a contribution to the development of the Omani space sector, and 8 of them were selected as priority projects and easy to implement
  • Non-Core projects (3 projects), preferably. This is because it would accelerate the growth of the Omani space sector

All these projects participate in realizing the Sultanate's vision in the space sector and serve the four Pillers on which the Omani space policy was based: economic diversification, national security, capacity building, the environment and the preservation of natural resources.

The proposed initiatives will be implemented over a period of ten years, divided into 3-time phases (the preparation phase is 3 years, the launch phase is 4 years, and the orbital phase is 3 years).
