The digital economy is the economy that relies on digital technologies in the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services, such as e-government services, artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, and e-commerce.
The program aims, thru its executive programs, to increase the contribution of the digital economy to the GDP from 2% to 10% by 2040.
The governance of the program's implementation is based on three levels, which are:
- The Financial and Economic Committee emanating from the esteemed Council of Ministers, which is responsible for the overall supervision of the National Digital Economy Program and its alignment with the targets of Oman Vision 2040.
- The Technical Committee for the Digital Economy, whose task is to monitor the progress of programs and overcome obstacles and challenges.
- The executive team for each executive program, which are teams executing initiatives and projects in government entities.
The "AI Makers" initiative, implemented in collaboration with higher education institutions, has achieved remarkable results in supporting scientific research within the field of artificial intelligence.
At the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, the initiative attracted 390 published research papers, 63 of which qualified—including 18 published in Q1-ranked journals. Additionally, the six award categories received 222 entries, with winners distributed across the university’s branches in Muscat, Shinas, Ibri, and Ibra. The initiative concluded at the university on May 14, 2026.
At the National University of Science and Technology, the evaluation of entries for the first year (2025–2026) was completed, and the results were approved by the steering committee; recommendations were made to award incentives to eight published research papers, three of which appeared in Q1-ranked journals. The winners are scheduled to be announced in November 2026.
