11,000 Vessel Calls and 4 Million TEUs: Omani Seaports Record Growth in Operational Activity
Date Published: 18 October 2026
Omani seaports recorded significant growth in operational activity from January to the end of August 2026 compared with the same period in 2025. The increase reflects expanding cargo handling and logistics activity, strengthening the Sultanate of Oman’s position in regional and international trade and maritime transport. Laila bint Ali Al Batashi, Director of the Ports and Marine Terminals Department at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, said vessel calls at Omani seaports and marine terminals outside port boundaries increased by 27.9% to more than 11,000 during the first eight months of 2026, compared with 8,793 in the corresponding period of 2025.
She explained that container throughput grew by 20.5% to more than 4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), compared with 3,368,465 TEUs during the same period last year. This growth reflects expanding trade activity and the efficiency of operations at Omani seaports. Al Batashi added that cargo throughput rose by 62.3% to approximately 146 million tonnes by the end of August 2026, compared with around 90.5 million tonnes during the corresponding period of 2025. The increase reflects growing cargo volumes and the expanding role of seaports in supporting supply chains and logistics services.
Vehicle handling recorded the highest growth rate among the operational indicators monitored, rising by 182.6%. The number of vehicles handled at seaports reached 188,368, compared with 66,661 during the same period last year. Al Batashi affirmed that these indicators reflect growing operational activity at Omani seaports this year, with increases in vessel calls, container throughput, cargo volumes and vehicles handled. She noted that this growth reinforces the role of seaports as a key pillar of the transport and logistics system and an important gateway for facilitating trade and strengthening connectivity between the Sultanate of Oman and regional and international markets.
