MTCIT also announced plans to install 350 electric vehicle charging points by 2027, in line with the rapid growth in electric vehicle adoption in the Sultanate of Oman, with the number of EVs exceeding 5,800 by the end of the first quarter of 2026. These efforts coincided with the Ministry receiving the Gold Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Award as part of the Oman Sustainability Week 2026 Awards.

Mazen bin Rashid Al Habsi, Projects Engineer at the Carbon Net Zero Office, said that the Ministry’s pavilion at Oman Sustainability Week highlights green transport projects, sustainable infrastructure initiatives, and programmes supporting the transition towards a low-carbon economy, reinforcing the Sultanate of Oman’s position as a regional hub for sustainability-driven projects. He explained that, within the sustainable maritime transport sector, the Ministry is showcasing several pioneering projects with environmental and economic impact. Among the most prominent is the Green Ship Recycling Facility project in Khatmat Milaha, which supports the adoption of circular economy principles and sustainable practices within the maritime sector.

The Ministry is also showcasing the Shore Power project at the Port of Sohar, which aims to reduce carbon emissions generated by ship engines while vessels are berthed at the port. In addition, the Ministry highlighted the project to establish the first integrated green methanol production facility in the Sultanate of Oman, aimed at developing a comprehensive ecosystem for producing and supplying green fuel to ships, thereby accelerating the transition towards low-emission maritime shipping solutions. Al Habsi noted that the Ministry is also presenting its key electric mobility targets for 2026, including the announcement of licences for electric charging operators and the launch of the regulatory framework for electric charging points. The framework aims to regulate the market and establish the necessary technical and operational standards for developing the electric charging ecosystem in line with international best practices.

Furthermore, the Ministry plans this year to launch the national “Shahin” digital charging platform, a unified digital platform designed to help electric vehicle users locate charging stations, check charger availability and operational status, and enhance the overall user experience. The Ministry is also preparing to announce electric charging service tariffs to ensure the sustainability of the sector and encourage investment. The Projects Engineer at the Carbon Net Zero Office added that the Ministry’s pavilion has witnessed increasing interest from visitors, particularly following the signing of two memoranda of understanding in the field of sustainable mobility. Visitors have shown growing interest in the potential use of electric motorcycles and drones for food and parcel delivery services within the Sultanate of Oman.

In this context, a dedicated area has been allocated within the Ministry’s pavilion to showcase the “Last-Mile Delivery” initiative using electric motorcycles, as one of the leading initiatives supporting sustainable urban mobility. The initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote the adoption of clean transportation solutions in the delivery services sector. The pavilion also features the latest future technologies and innovations in transport and logistics, including a drone delivery project, reflecting the Ministry’s direction towards adopting smart and innovative solutions that enhance delivery efficiency and support sustainability goals.
