MTCIT Showcases Efforts to Empower Persons with Disabilities through Purple Saturday Campaign
Date Published: 26 July 2026
The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) participated in the national Purple Saturday campaign, organised by the Ministry of Social Development, showcasing its efforts aimed at empowering persons with disabilities and enhancing the accessibility of transport, communications, and information technology services, contributing to a more inclusive environment and enabling easier, more independent access to these services.
Start writThe Ministry's participation reflects its continued commitment to developing services that address the needs of persons with disabilities, strengthening cooperation with government entities, private-sector partners, and stakeholders, and leveraging advanced technologies and best practices that support their active participation in society, in line with the goals of Oman Vision 2040.
Transport and Logistics Sector
As the government entity responsible for overseeing the transport sector in the Sultanate of Oman, the Ministry continues to lead and monitor efforts to develop an accessible and inclusive transport system for persons with disabilities, in coordination with transport operators and sector partners. These efforts focus on supporting initiatives and solutions that improve access to transport services and enable safe and independent mobility.
As part of its participation in the Purple Saturday campaign, and in cooperation with a number of transport operators and service providers, the Ministry launched a range of initiatives and offers to support persons with disabilities, including free public transport services within cities and between governorates, as well as discounted ferry services.
Taxi operators and smart mobility platforms also supported the campaign by providing complimentary transport services, discounted ride services, and promotional codes, enabling beneficiaries to make use of these services throughout the campaign period.
These initiatives complement the ongoing efforts to enhance land transport services. The Oman National Transport Company (Mwasalat) continues to upgrade its services and facilities to better serve persons with disabilities by equipping buses and stations with wheelchair-accessible features, designated seating, audio announcement systems, and electronic display screens. The company also provides specialised training for drivers on assisting persons with different types of disabilities and implements community initiatives that promote inclusion.
The adoption of modern technologies has also contributed to improving access to transport services. Among these initiatives is the AI-powered voice booking service available through the TaxiF application, enabling persons with visual impairments to access transport services more easily.
In the maritime transport sector, the Ministry continues to coordinate with operators to enhance services and facilities provided through ferries and ports by introducing accessible boarding bridges, dedicated facilities, wheelchairs, secure restraint systems, designated passenger areas for persons with disabilities, assisted boarding and disembarkation services, and specialised crew training to respond effectively to passengers' needs under various operational conditions.
Within the aviation sector, the Ministry continues to coordinate with the relevant authorities and airport operators to further enhance services and facilities for travellers with disabilities, including assistance services, wheelchairs, accessible facilities, priority routes, and meet-and-assist services, ensuring a smoother, more comfortable, and more inclusive travel experience.
Communications and Information Technology Sector
Within the communications and information technology sector, the Ministry continues to implement initiatives that advance digital accessibility across the Sultanate of Oman, promoting digital inclusion and ensuring that persons with disabilities can access and benefit from digital services efficiently and independently.
These efforts include implementing digital accessibility initiatives and enhancing compliance with digital accessibility requirements across government websites and mobile applications, in line with the goals of Oman Vision 2040.
The Ministry also provides technical support and specialised advisory services to government entities, in addition to conducting field visits, awareness programmes, and capacity-building initiatives. It has also launched a visual resource library and a unified communication channel to promote digital accessibility and encourage the adoption of best practices.
Furthermore, the Ministry has issued the Digital Accessibility Guideline and the Mobile Applications Guideline to support government entities and developers in designing and developing more accessible and user-friendly digital services for persons with disabilities. These efforts are complemented by expanded regional and international partnerships that facilitate knowledge exchange and reinforce the Sultanate of Oman's position in advancing digital inclusion.
Continuing Efforts
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to continuously developing the transport, communications, and information technology sectors by enhancing the readiness of services, facilities, and digital solutions to better meet the needs of persons with disabilities through close cooperation with relevant stakeholders and continued support for initiatives aimed at improving accessibility and the quality of services.
The Ministry also continues to implement joint initiatives with its government, private-sector, and community partners while leveraging modern technologies and advanced practices to deliver more efficient, accessible, and high-quality services, supporting the goals of Oman Vision 2040 in building an integrated system that serves all members of society.ing here...
