Dhofar Governorate hosted the conclusion of the Gulf Green Mobility Forum, held under the patronage of H.E. Sheikh Salem bin Mustahail Al Ma’shani, Advisor at the Royal Court, at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah. The forum, which attracted wide participation from Omani and Gulf officials, experts, and specialists, marked a milestone in regional efforts to advance sustainable mobility and green transport solutions.

As the first forum of its kind in Oman dedicated to Gulf youth, the event provided a platform to discuss regional initiatives and projects in sustainable transport, highlight pioneering experiences from across the GCC, and showcase Oman’s national efforts to promote innovation and sustainability in the transport sector. These discussions were closely aligned with the National Net Zero 2050 Program and Oman Vision 2040.

A Shared Gulf Vision for Green Transformation

In his address, Eng. Abdullah bin Ali Al Busaidi, Director General of Oman Logistics Center and Net Zero Team Expert at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, emphasized the region’s growing commitment to clean, renewable energy as part of a global “green transformation.” He outlined a phased vision that begins with the establishment of electric vehicle assembly plants and world-class charging networks, moves toward exporting Gulf-made green vehicles and building industries for battery production and recycling, and ultimately positions the green mobility sector as a cornerstone of Gulf economies, driving both sustainability and competitiveness on the global stage.

The Green Dhofar Initiative

Al Busaidi also announced the launch of the “Green Dhofar Initiative,” a strategic partnership between the Ministry and the Office of the Governor of Dhofar. The initiative seeks to make Dhofar a model for green mobility by fostering sustainable transport infrastructure and supporting technological innovations.

Strengthening Gulf Cooperation in Sustainable Transport

Dr. Mohammed Al-Rashidi, Director of Energy at the GCC General Secretariat, praised Oman’s hosting of the forum, which follows the decision of the 26th GCC Transport and Communications Ministers’ Meeting. He highlighted the GCC’s commitment to sustainable mobility as a driver of economic and social development, closely tied to environmental protection and emission reduction. He reaffirmed the Secretariat’s support for joint policies, knowledge sharing, and regional and international partnerships that advance the collective transition to a low-carbon economy.

Strategic Agreements and Partnerships

The forum also witnessed the signing of several strategic agreements. Among them was a cooperation program between the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning to develop a low-emission smart city in Sultan Haitham City, integrating public transport, cycling and pedestrian paths, electric buses, autonomous mobility, and digital ticketing systems. Dhofar Municipality and Mwasalat signed an agreement to develop smart and sustainable bus stops in the governorate, while the National Green Mobility Company signed a founding agreement with China Middle East Development to establish Oman’s first integrated platform for electric mobility, supported by further partnerships with Chinese and Omani companies, Sohar International Bank, and Al Maha Petroleum. Another milestone was the signing of the “Clean Energy Supply for Ships at Sohar Port” agreement, designed to power vessels through onshore connections and reduce harmful emissions, as well as the launch of a major ship recycling project in Khatmat Malaha that will generate thousands of jobs and position Oman as a regional hub for green ship recycling.

Supporting Green Mobility Initiatives

Several innovative initiatives were also announced during the forum. These included the launch of an on-demand transit service providing flexible mobility through app-based booking, the unveiling of the national EV charging application “Shaahin” to unify charging platforms across Oman, and a private sector initiative by Aramex to power its warehouses with solar energy, reducing hundreds of tons of annual carbon emissions.

GCC Workshop Outcomes

The outcomes of a Gulf-wide virtual workshop were presented, with representatives from all GCC states agreeing on joint initiatives such as a unified electric vehicle charging platform, cooperative spare parts supply, and the establishment of a regional data platform for green mobility.

Youth Innovation Awards

The forum concluded with the honoring of young innovators whose projects offered fresh solutions for sustainable transport. The winning ideas included a mobile charging vehicle equipped with high-capacity batteries, a digital platform linking EV owners with service providers, and a community awareness campaign promoting green mobility in schools and universities.

With its rich discussions, landmark agreements, and youth-driven innovations, the Gulf Green Mobility Forum underscored the GCC’s collective resolve to accelerate the transition toward a sustainable, low-carbon future in transport—anchoring green mobility as a driver of innovation, investment, and environmental stewardship across the region.
