“GCC Green Mobility Ecosystem Lab” Discusses Regulation of Electric Charging and Green Hydrogen for Heavy Transport

The “GCC Green Mobility Ecosystem Lab”, held as part of the Gulf Green Mobility Forum 2026, discussed a number of policies, regulations and technical solutions related to the development of the sustainable mobility ecosystem across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, with a focus on electric charging infrastructure and the role of green hydrogen in the heavy transport sector and logistics ecosystem.

Regulation of Electric Charging

The first theme of the Lab addressed the regulatory frameworks and legislation governing electric vehicle charging stations, as well as operating and management models for charging point operators. It also explored ways to integrate charging infrastructure with smart grids and load management systems. Participants also discussed challenges related to investment, licensing and the provision of infrastructure supporting electric mobility, as well as the role of governments in creating an enabling regulatory environment and encouraging private-sector participation in developing and expanding the electric charging market.

Hydrogen for Heavy Transport

The second theme focused on the role of green hydrogen in reducing emissions from the heavy transport sector, including trucks and buses, as well as the readiness of logistics infrastructure to accommodate hydrogen technologies and their applications in the transport sector. The Lab also discussed green hydrogen supply chain models in ports and industrial zones, as well as policies and incentives that could contribute to developing demand for hydrogen in the transport sector, thereby supporting the transition towards low-emission transport solutions. The Lab is expected to contribute to developing a roadmap identifying regulatory and technical gaps related to electric mobility infrastructure, in addition to formulating recommendations that support the development of emerging green mobility markets and preparing an initial framework for integrating electric charging systems with hydrogen solutions in the heavy transport sector.

It also aims to strengthen regional cooperation among GCC countries in sustainable mobility projects and facilitate the exchange of expertise and experiences in developing policies, infrastructure and technologies that support the transition in the transport sector. The Lab serves as a platform for dialogue among relevant stakeholders to identify priorities and challenges and establish practical pathways that can support the development of an integrated green mobility ecosystem at the GCC level.
