Mauritanian-Omani Digitalisation Forum Advances Partnerships for a Sustainable Digital Economy

As part of an official visit by an Omani delegation to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania to strengthen bilateral cooperation and partnership in communications and information technology, and to promote the exchange of expertise, knowledge and experiences in the digital economy, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, data centres and digital innovation, the Mauritanian-Omani Digitalisation Forum was held under the slogan “Promising Partnerships Towards a Sustainable Digital Economy.”

The Omani delegation was headed by H.E. Dr Ali bin Amer Al Shidhani, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology for Communications and Information Technology, and included representatives of the Ministry, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and a number of specialised Omani technology companies.

The forum brought together officials, representatives of government entities, the private sector and technology companies from both countries to discuss opportunities for cooperation in communications and information technology, exchange experiences in digital transformation, and explore prospects for new partnerships between institutions and technology companies.

The forum forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between the Sultanate of Oman and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, expand cooperation in the communications and information technology sector, support digital transformation, explore investment opportunities and build strategic partnerships towards a sustainable digital economy.

The event featured presentations on digital initiatives and successful experiences, while discussions focused on opportunities for cooperation in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing and digital services, in addition to the exchange of expertise and knowledge between government institutions and technology companies in both countries.

The forum also served as a platform for strengthening engagement between the public and private sectors through meetings between Omani and Mauritanian technology companies to explore opportunities for cooperation, investment and the development of innovative digital solutions that support the growth of the technology sector and enhance the role of technology in economic development.

The forum witnessed the signing of five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between Omani and Mauritanian institutions and companies.

The first MoU was signed between Future Cities SAOC (Tadom) and Tamkeen Mauritania to implement a pilot project for an Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system for water meters using LoRaWAN technology in an agreed geographical area covering 100 accounts, including the supply of gateways and smart water meters.

The second MoU was signed between Win Services LLC of Mauritania and Al Anqa Space and Technology LLC of Oman to explore commercial and technical cooperation opportunities in the Mauritanian and West African markets, and where appropriate, the Gulf markets, including joint projects and bids in security, surveillance, mapping and digital transformation while promoting technology and skills transfer.

The third MoU was signed between Main Business Solutions LLC (Asas) of Oman and Tamkeen Mauritania to strengthen cooperation in digital transformation and technology services and develop innovative digital solutions for both markets.

The fourth MoU was signed between the Oman Coding Academy and the Remote Training and Exchange Centre of the Ministry of Digital Transformation and Modernisation of Administration of Mauritania to cooperate in training, conferences, workshops, consultancy services, e-learning and digital capacity building.

The fifth MoU was signed between the Oman Coding Academy and Takween Company in Mauritania to cooperate in training and qualification programmes, digital learning platforms, continuous learning, and specialised technical and administrative boot camps to enhance the digital capabilities of public sector employees and jobseekers.

The forum and the MoUs signed during the visit reflect the shared commitment of the Sultanate of Oman and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania to expanding cooperation in communications and information technology and the digital economy. They reaffirm both countries' commitment to strengthening partnerships between government institutions and the private sector, promoting the exchange of expertise, fostering innovation and creating an enabling environment for investment in advanced technologies, thereby supporting sustainable development in both countries.
